Positive balance of Governor Aury Guerrero after meeting at the United Nations
The Governor of San Andres and Providence, Aury Guerrero Bowie, met on Monday in New York City with Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-Moon. During the meeting, the Colombian Government presented its arguments against the recent ruling by the International Court of Justice in The Hague which seeks to redraw maritime boundary with Nicaragua over territorial waters of the Archipelago. The arguments before the UN were presented by the Chancellor and the Governor of San Andres.
Aury Guerrero Bowie said, that the visit to the UN seeks to "visualize" the Raizal Community, and that the world understand that we are not deciding "on little water or two stones in the sea, but about people , ancestral owners of a territory, people that live, feels, and have to survive."
Aury Guerrero Bowie, who has requested a legal review of the case, was pleased to have had the opportunity to speak with Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon on the impact of the ICJ ruling in the Raizal Community, both in terms of human rights as well as economic rights.
The Colombian Government left today "very satisfied" from the UN after defending before the Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, their arguments against the recent ruling by the International Court of Justice in The Hague, said the international media.
"The Secretary-General was very attentive to our explanations and we were very satisfied with the meeting," said before the press the Colombian Foreign Minister, Maria Angela Holguin, after her meeting with Ban Ki-Moon, which was accompanied by the Governor of San Andres, Aury Guerrero, and the mayor of Providence, Arturo Robinson.
"We know that this ancestral territory belongs to us, which has its riches, and the decision has to be reconsidered. We do not want to continue our economic development giving our back to the sea," said the Governor, who acknowledged that the ruling "is not appealable but is subject to be reconsidered.”
